“The world’s first street art disaster movie” is the Sundance Film Festival’s Spotlight Surprise.
You’ve probably heard of Banksy, the legendary guerilla artist, who received quite a bit of publicity in 2006 when he famously replaced hundreds of copies of Paris Hilton’s debut CD in 48 different UK record stores with a version featuring his cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse.Maybe you recall hearing of his paintings on the Israeli West Bank barrier wall, or one of his numerous other adventurous artistic endeavours throughout the world. If you haven’t acquainted yourself with Banksy yet, get ready for his film “Exit Through The Gift Shop”, because some critics are saying it’s a winner.
Described as a documentary about Banksy’s relationship with an impressionable French film-maker, the film was a hit at its suprise screening on 24 January. Named after a piece that went on display at the Banksy vs Bristol Museum exhibition last summer, “Exit Through The Gift Shop” is described by the artist as “…the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And Failed.” Later, he explained to the Guardian newspaper, “It’s a film about a man who tried to make a film about me. Everything in it is true, especially the bits where we all lie.”
John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, told the Daily Mail “Sundance has shown films by unknown artists, but never an anonymous one,” going on to add “‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ is one of those films that comes along once in a great while; a warped hybrid of reality and self-induced fiction while at the same time a totally entertaining experience. The story is so bizarre I began to question if it could even be real, but in the end I didn’t care.”
“I feel bad I won’t be able to shake the film-maker’s hand and tell him how much I love this film. I think I will shake everyone’s hand that day and hope I hit on Banksy somewhere. I love his work in all forms.”
According to the Guardian, all of the major film buyers attended the film’s Sundance premiere, so hopefully many more people will be able to get a taste of the Banksy art experience.
